Hockey Night in Balad, Updates
Murrysville Dek Hockey and SportZone received a package from Colonel Ronald Ross in the mail today. In it was a flag and certificate of authenticity stating that "The flag was flown in front of the 330th Transportation Battalion, Balad , Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Thank you for your support from all of the Soldiers, NCOs, and Officers of the 330th Transportation Battalion." The certificate is awarded to The Murrysville SportZone and Dek Hockey Family.
Also included in the package was a letter from Colonel Ross. It reads:
I am humbled and would like to thank you from the bottom of my/our hearts for your generous donations. We received through SFC Dan Nelson of the 5th Engineer Battalion all the hockey gear and equipment donated by you and your patrons. The hockey gear we were using had been here for a few years and had seen its days years ago. We tapped, glued, and other forms of repairs to keep what we had functioning.
Through your generosity and kindness I cannot begin to tell you how much this means to us and the uplifting of our morale. A few nights a week and Sunday afternoons we get to play “The Greatest Sport in the World – Hockey”. During those precious moments we forget where we are at. Hockey has really grown here and all the old/new players love it. You all have made an incredible difference for so many Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, Sailors, and yes we have a few Coast Guardsmen that play. We recently hosted Joint Base Balad’s first ever 3 on 3 Hockey Tournament with incredible success. Without your support this never would have taken place.
Again we are grateful for your thoughtfulness in your support of us while we are deployed away from home. It’s good to know America is filled with great Americans like you.
Heart of the Dragon!!

The first shipment of equipment was made on November 23rd! Thank you all for the donations that you made for my Uncle and the soldiers, sailors, and airmen from Joint Base Balad.

Hockey Night in Balad, Iraq
On Sunday July 13th I received the following e-mail from my Uncle Dan who is deployed in Iraq. He and his brother Bill were instrumental in getting me started in playing hockey. So I am asking all of the Murrysville Sportzone and Dek Hockey family for help. We are accepting cash donations as well as new and used equipment donations to ship to my uncle and his fellow hockey players. The dek has agreed to match any money donations made and in conjunction with Mylec Sports provide cost-effective equipment solutions! There is a jug located in the pro-shop for donations, and they will also accept equipment donations for us. I thank all of you in advance for your awesome generosity in this matter!

"I did start playing hockey again, if you want to call it that. So I need a huge favor from you.... We are using equipment that is either handmade or held together by tape. Is there anyway you could sales pitch everyone you know back there in the hockey industry about sponsoring us. We need equipment bad, there is about 10-15 of us that play. We had to fight the people in charge of the base we are on to get them to agree to let us play in the little gym they have here. We built some goals out of wood that are falling apart and made some sticks too. It's bad, worse than the way we started out. Most of the stuff we have is broken or falling apart from using it. But we are trying, so if there is anyway you could see if they would be willing to help out a small group of Soldiers keep their "Hockey Night in Balad" as we call it. We would be so grateful. We could use anything and everything."
